Always one to capitalize on timely events, Disney announced a surprise twist to its anticipated EPCOT attraction, “Journey of Water Inspired by ‘Moana'”. Given the recent brushes with tropical weather, the Imagineers found inspiration from an unexpected source: Florida’s notorious storm season.
Originally slated to be a magical stroll through water’s life cycle as told through the eyes of Moana, the ride now promises to take guests on a whirlwind tour of what it’s truly like to experience Florida’s unpredictable tempests.
“We felt that Moana’s journey, as epic as it was, lacked the authenticity of being drenched by a sudden downpour or wrestling with an inside-out umbrella,” shared a Disney spokesperson, wearing water shoes and a poncho. “We want our guests to feel the true power of water.”
The updated attraction will feature such authentic experiences as:
- Sudden Showers: Just as you’re getting into the groove of “How Far I’ll Go,” be prepared for an unexpected, torrential downpour. And just like in real life, there’s nowhere to hide!
- Lost Flip-flops: Ever lost a sandal in a Florida flood? Now you can, repeatedly! Watch as your shoe gets swept away by a miniature flash flood. But don’t worry, you can purchase a new pair at the conveniently located gift shop at the exit.
- The Gust Tunnel: Experience the thrill of those unexpected wind gusts that turn any walking venture into a battle against nature. Hold onto your Mickey ears!
- Flying Lawn Chairs: A playful nod to the many poolside items that find themselves airborne during a storm. Try to catch one and win a free Genie+!
- Overflowing Drains: No storm experience would be complete without the sudden lakes that appear on pathways. Try to jump over them or, more likely, just get your socks wet.
Fans of Moana need not fret, however. The heart of the ride still promises a nod to the beloved Polynesian navigator, with spontaneous renditions of “You’re Welcome” every time guests encounter an unforeseen weather mishap.
“I came to EPCOT to escape reality, not to wade through it!,” said Becky Larsson, a visitor from Arizona. “But if anyone can make a storm fun, it’s Disney.”
Scheduled to open soon, the reimagined “Journey of Water” promises to be a splash, come rain or shine. Because at Disney, it’s not just about the destination, but the soggy journey along the way.
